[Virtualacorn-list] Virtual Acorn Setup Problem

I've got two copies of VA, one on a laptop, courtesy of RComp, another on
a small desktop machine that I'm hoping to use as a replacement for my
ageing RPC.
The laptop version is configured as a different user and will start up
automatically if I log on as that user. It starts fairly promptly and
works without problems - and fast.
The version on the desktop has been problematic to set up - initially
under Windows 2000, latterly under XP. The major problem is that it often
runs painfully slowly for some time before getting up to a reasonable
speed. Occasionally, especially during file copying operations, it will
seize up for several minutes, and then continue at normal speed.
I suspect the slow speed is caused by heavy activity on other processes
by Windows, but have not been able to determine what process(es) these
are. When VA stalls, attempts to bring up the Task Manager are also slow
and as it kicks into action, so does VA.
Possible culprits are virus scanning (AVG Free) or Windows checking for
updates. I've not found settings for these that change this behaviour.
If anyone has suggestions of what is the likely cause, or methods of
finding out the cause, I'd be very grateful.
So far, the RPC has been better behaved but I feel that it will not go
for ever.
Cheers,
Steve
