The usual method is:

In power management, select "Always on", and make sure that on 
battery, nothing is set to occur.
In Alarms, make sure bartery low action is set to none.
In screensavers, set None.
Now, from a fully chared battery, let the machine run until the 
battery goes flat. This teaches the battery management software what 
the current battery capability is.
Now reset everything back to the way it was.

Experience suggests that with a tyypical two-year old battery, about 
25% extra runtime is obtained. Figures vary considerably.
