Righto, but that's totally unrelated to how the printer is physically
connected to the machine. I have a Parallel port HP LaserJet4
connected to a USB port via an adapter cable here - and it prints
perfectly.

Did you try printing from other apps?
Are you using the same PDF (Printer defintion file) as used on the  other
VRPC?
Are you using the same version of !Printers?
etc
 
There are a number of reasons why things might not work.
