I grovel, of course, at not doing the tests when I had raised the
problem in the first place.

I acknowledged that I had received a fix and said that it was my fault
('chickened out') for not trying it out and then gave an explanation why
I had not done so.

May I repeat my apology for not testing out this offered fix.  I was
genuinely concerned that things might go wrong.  But obviously that is
no excuse.

Your rebuke is accepted.  Can you accept my apology?

My I thank you for your guidance on how to preserve my existing
environment, it is very kind of you after having disheartened you so
much.
