It's certainly possible to flush the keyboard buffer. However I don't  think
that this would help - as without a key up event the buffer will 
just get filled up again. Out of interest I wonder what would happen
if (when this event occured) the keyboard was unplugged from the
machine? Obviously this can only be tried with a USB keyboard
and would be done at the "owners risk".
 
I would test this myself, but then I haven't had the problem for 
several years.
