To conclude...

Though the firmware on my DS110j was quite recent, this afternoon I
updated it to the latest version 2.3-1141 and lo and behold all my printer
woes have gone away.
It has also sorted the problem of the DS110j not seeing the printer if it
is switched on a while after the DS110j has been running.

Additionally, the new firmware has sorted the problem (In a similar vein)
that any external harddrive hotplugged after the DS110j was already
running was not seen by the thing

So, I know there are a few here with the device... I guess it would be a
good idea to update the firmware.

I can now print through PC and VRPC okay.
